TBay Betties
Betty (noun, surfing slang): a female surfer.
The TBay Betties are the women’s surfing group within TBay Surf Club — a welcoming community for adult female surfers of all abilities to learn, progress and enjoy the water together.

A supportive surf community for women
As the number of female members in the club continues to grow, the Betties provide a dedicated space where women can build confidence in the water, develop their surfing skills and form lasting friendships.
Whether you are catching your very first wave or looking to take your surfing to the next level, the Betties are open to adult female surfers at every stage of the journey.
What Betties do
- Social surf sessions
- Coaching programmes
- Skills development
- Surf trips and community connections
How it started
The original Betties initiative was established to encourage more women to get involved in surfing. With support from Surfing Ireland and the Women in Sport programme, the first Betties programme launched in May 2023, led and coached by Amanda Barry.
Since then, many club members have contributed to coaching and supporting the programme, helping it grow into an important part of the TBay Surf Club community.

Learn together
Supportive coaching and encouragement for women who want to improve at their own pace.
Surf together
Regular sessions help members feel confident, connected and motivated in the water.
Explore together
Surf trips create opportunities to experience new waves and build links with the wider women’s surfing community.
Newquay, Cornwall
In September 2026, the Betties travelled to Newquay, Cornwall, to meet members of the Newquay Women’s Surf Club. The trip was a chance to surf new waves, share experiences and strengthen connections with the wider women’s surfing community.
With more surf trips planned, the Betties hope to make these adventures a regular part of the club calendar.
